She gives away one wig a month. By Brianna Bailey Newport Beach salon owner Nazy Curtis had one consolation when she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. "At least I don't have to worry about losing my hair,"� she said. Curtis has had alopecia for the past 10 years. The disease causes patches of her hair to fall out. Nazy Curtis looks in the mirror at a station designed for hair systems at the d'Orsay Art of Hair salon Scientists believe the condition is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body's immune system to attack its own hair follicles. Today Curtis sports a short, spiky bob "” a photograph of an exotic bird with an exuberant crest of white feathers that hangs on one wall of her Newport Center salon was the inspiration for the cut, she said. Although she sees as many as 15 to 18 clients a day, most of them have no idea Curtis has alopecia, or that she is a cancer survivor. Curtis uses what she calls a "hair enhancement"� to hide her hair loss. Now Curtis says she wants to help other men and women dealing with hair loss due to cancer and alopecia. She's started a support group for people dealing with hair loss. Curtis also fits, cuts and dyes wigs for men and women with hair loss due to alopecia, chemotherapy treatments or other diseases. "These women still want to look beautiful,"� Curtis said. "It's one less thing for them to worry about. When you look good, you feel better."� Every few months, Curtis gives away a wig, which costs anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000, to someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford one. "I don't just give them away to anybody, you have to have a story, a good reason why you are deserving or can't afford something like this,"� Curtis said. Her customers say Curtis' experience with hair loss has helped them cope with the problem. "I think she has her foot in the door, she understands what we're going through because she's been through it,"� said Llana Barron, a 24-year-old cancer patient who Curtis recently fitted for a wig. "She's a mentor in a way. I can ask her questions about her treatment,"� Barron said. Curtis found a wig that matched Barron's natural dark-blond hair and added highlights and styled it for her. "It's basically like going into a salon and getting your hair done, Barron said. "She works on it as if it was my real hair."� Cancer free for the past year after undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Curtis still copes daily with her alopecia, but the experience has made her appreciate life more, she said. "I kiss my children and call my friends to tell them I love them for no reason,"� Curtis said. ALL ABOUT WIGS A wig is a head of hair made from horse-hair, human hair, wool, feathers, buffalo hair, or synthetic, worn on the head for fashion or various other aesthetic and stylistic reasons, including cultural and religious observance. The word wig is short for periwig and first appeared in the English language around 1675. Some people wear wigs to disguise the fact that they are bald. Actors, on the other hand often wear costume wigs in order to better portray the character they are playing. HISTORY Wigs have seemingly been worn throughout history, even on the genitals (see merkin); the ancient Egyptians, for instance, wore them to shield their hairless heads from the sun. Other ancient peoples, including the Assyrians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, also used wigs. Curiously, they are principally a Western form of dress — in the Far East they have rarely been used except in the traditional theatre of China and Japan. Some East Asian entertainers (Japanese Geisha, Korean Kisaeng) wore wigs (Katsura and gache respectively.) as part of their traditional costumes. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the use of wigs fell into abeyance in the West for a thousand years until revived in the 16th century as a means of compensating for hair loss or improving one's personal appearance. They also served a practical purpose: the unhygienic conditions of the time meant that hair attracted head lice, a problem that could be much reduced if natural hair were shaved and replaced with a more easily de-loused artificial hairpiece. Fur hoods were also used in a similar preventative fashion. Royal patronage was crucial to the revival of the wig. Queen Elizabeth I of England famously wore a red wig, tightly and elaborately curled in a "Roman" style and King Louis XIII of France pioneered wig-wearing among men from the 1620s onwards. Perukes or periwigs for men were introduced into the English-speaking world with other French styles when Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, following a lengthy exile in France. These wigs were shoulder-length or longer, imitating the long hair that had become fashionable among men since the 1620s. Their use soon became popular in the English court. The London diarist Samuel Pepys recorded the day in 1665 that a barber had shaved his head and that he tried on his new periwig for the first time, but in a year of plague he was uneasy about wearing it: "3rd September 1665: Up, and put on my coloured silk suit, very fine, and my new periwig, bought a good while since, but darst not wear it because the plague was in Westminster when I bought it. And it is a wonder what will be the fashion after the plague is done as to periwigs, for nobody will dare to buy any haire for fear of the infection? that it had been cut off the heads of people dead of the plague." Wigs were not without other drawbacks, as Pepys noted on 27 March 1667: "I did go to the Swan; and there sent for Jervas my old periwig-maker and he did bring me a periwig; but it was full of nits, so as I was troubled to see it (it being his old fault) and did send him to make it clean." With wigs becoming virtually obligatory garb for men of virtually any significant social rank, wigmakers gained considerable prestige. A wigmakers' guild was established in France in 1665, a development soon copied elsewhere in Europe. Their job was a skilled one as 17th century wigs were extraordinarily elaborate, covering the back and shoulders and flowing down the chest; not surprisingly, they were also extremely heavy and often uncomfortable to wear. Such wigs were expensive to produce. The best examples were made from natural human hair. The hair of horses and goats was often used as a cheaper alternative. In the 18th century, wigs were powdered in order to give them their distinctive white or off-white color. Wig powder was made from finely ground starch that was scented with orange flower, lavender, or orris root. Wig powder was occasionally colored violet, blue, pink or yellow, but was most often used as white. Powdered wigs became an essential for full dress occasions and continued in use until almost the end of the 18th century. Powdering wigs was messy and inconvenient and the development of the naturally white or off-white powderless wig (made of horsehair) is no doubt what has made the retention of wigs in everyday court dress a practical possibility. By the 1780s, young men were setting a fashion trend by lightly powdering their natural hair. After 1790, both wigs and powder were reserved for older more conservative men, and were in use by ladies being presented at court. In 1795, the English government levied a tax of hair powder of one guinea per year. This tax effectively caused the demise of both the fashion for wigs and powder by 1800. Among women in the French court of Versailles in the mid-to-late 18th century, large, elaborate and often themed (such as the stereotypical "boat wigs") were in vogue for women. These wigs were often very heavy, weighted down with pomades, powders, and other ornamentation. In the late 18th century these wigs (along with many other indulgences in court life) became symbolic of the decadence of the French nobility, which only helped to fuel the French Revolution. During the 18th century, wigs became smaller and more formal with several professions adopting them as part of their official costumes. This tradition survives in a few legal systems. They are routinely worn in various countries of the Commonwealth. Until 1823, bishops of the Church of England and Church of Ireland wore ceremonial wigs. The wigs worn by barristers are in the style favoured in the late eighteenth century. Judges' wigs are, in everyday use as court dress, short like barristers' wigs (although in a slightly different style) but for ceremonial occasions judges and also senior barristers (QCs) wear full-bottomed wigs. The wearing of wigs as a symbol of social status was largely abandoned in the newly created United States and France by the start of the 19th century, although it persisted a little longer in the United Kingdom. Women's wigs developed in a somewhat different way. They were worn from the 18th century onwards - although at first only surreptitiously - and full wigs in the 19th and early 20th century were not fashionable. They were often worn by old ladies who had lost their hair. In the film Mr. Skeffington (1944), when Bette Davis has to wear a wig after a bout of diphtheria, it is a moment of pathos and a symbol of her frailty. TODAY WIGS Today, wigs are worn by many on a daily or occasional basis as a matter of convenience as they can be styled ahead of time and then worn when there is not sufficient time to style one's own hair. They are also worn by individuals who are experiencing hair loss due to medical reasons (most commonly cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or those who are suffering from alopecia areata). In men, the most common cause of baldness is "male-pattern baldness" and this is probably the most common reason for wig-wearing in this group. The post-menopausal diffuse baldness of women, while more common than generally realized, is usually not severe enough to warrant the wearing of a wig. A number of celebrities, including Dolly Parton and Raquel Welch have popularized wigs. Cher has worn all kinds of wigs in the last 40 years- from blonde to black, and curly to straight. They may also be worn for fun as part of fancy dress (costume wearing), when they can be of outlandish colour or made from tinsel. They are quite common at Halloween, when "rubber wigs" (solid bald cap-like hats, shaped like hair), are sold at some stores. Rodolfo Valentin, the New York based hair designer, is worldwide known by the quality of his crafted, hand-custom-made hairpieces and wigs. In Britain and most Commonwealth nations, special wigs are also worn by barristers, judges, and certain parliamentary and municipal or civic officials as a symbol of the office. The original purpose of the legal wig was said to provide a form of anonymity and safety (i.e. disguise). Today, Hong Kong barristers and judges continue to wear wigs as part of court dress as an influence from their former jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Nations. Some women wear wigs, known as a sheitel, for this purpose. .   ABOUT ALOPECIA Alopecia areata (AA) is a condition affecting humans, in which hair is lost from areas of the body, usually from the scalp.[1] Because it causes bald spots on the scalp, especially in the first stages, it is sometimes called spot baldness. In 1%–2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp (Alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (Alopecia universalis). Conditions resembling AA, and having a similar cause, occur also in other species. The condition affects 1%–2% of humans, occurring in both males and females. Alopecia areata occurs in people who are apparently healthy and have no skin disorder. Initial presentation most commonly occurs in the late teenage years, early childhood, or young adulthood, but can happen with people of all ages. The most common type of alopecia areata involves hair loss in one or more round spots on the scalp. Diffuse Alopecia Areata - Hair may also be lost more diffusely over the whole scalp. Alopecia Areata Monolocularis - describes baldness in only one spot. It may occur anywhere on the head. Alopecia Areata Multilocularis - refers to multiple areas of hair loss. Alopecia Areata Barbae - The disease may be limited only to the beard. Alopecia Areata Totalis - If the patient loses all the hair on his/her scalp. Alopecia Areata Universalis - If all body hair, including pubic hair, is lost. Alopecia areata totalis and universalis are rare. Causes Alopecia areata is not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor. In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases. The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. There is evidence that T cell lymphocytes cluster around these follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss. An unknown environmental trigger such as emotional stress or a pathogen is thought to combine with hereditary factors to cause the condition. There are a few recorded cases of babies being born with congenital alopecia areata; however, these are not cases of autoimmune disease because an infant is born without a fully developed immune system. As with most autoimmune diseases, alopecia areata is associated with increased risk of developing other autoimmune diseases, specifically systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE. Diagnosis Alopecia areata Alopecia areata First symptoms are small, soft, bald patches which can take just about any shape but are most usually round. It most often affects the scalp and beard but may occur on any hair-bearing part of the body. There may be different skin areas with hair loss and regrowth in the same body at the same time. It may also go into remission for a time, or permanently. The area of hair loss may tingle or be very slightly painful. The hair tends to fall out over a short period of time, with the loss commonly occurring more on one side of the scalp than the other. Another presentation of the condition are exclamation point hairs. Exclamation point hairs are hairs that become narrower along the length of the strand closer to the base, producing a characteristic "exclamation point" appearance. One diagnostic technique applied by medical professionals is to gently tug at a handful of hair along the edge of a patch with less strength than would be required to pull out healthy hair. In healthy hair, no hair should fall out or ripped hair should be distributed evenly across the tugged portion of the scalp. In cases of alopecia, hair will tend to pull out easier along the edge of the patch where the follicles are already being attacked by the body's immune system than away from the patch where they are still healthy. Professionals usually remind patients that the hair that is pulled out would eventually fall naturally. The test is conducted only once to identify the condition and rule out a simple localized hair loss condition. Nails may have pitting or trachyonychia Treatment Since the exact mechanisms are not ultimately understood, there is no known cure to date. About 50% of patients' hair will regrow in one year without any treatment. If the affected region is small, it is reasonable to observe the progression of the illness as the problem often spontaneously regresses and the hair grows back. In 90% of cases, the hair will, ultimately, grow back. In the other 10%, only some or no hair will regrow. In cases where there is severe hair loss, there has been limited success treating alopecia areata with clobetasol or fluocinonide, steroid injections, or cream. Steroid injections are commonly used in sites where there are small areas of hair loss on the head or especially where eyebrow hair has been lost. Some other medications used are minoxidil, irritants (anthralin or topical coal tar), and topical immunotherapy cyclosporine, each of which are sometimes used in different combinations. Oral corticosteroids decrease the hair loss, but only for the period during which they are taken, and these drugs have adverse side effects. Initial stages may be kept from increasing by applying topical corticosteroids. However, topical corticosteroids frequently fail to enter the skin deeply enough to affect the hair bulbs, which are the treatment target. Hair implants may help covering bald spots, but cannot guarantee satisfactory outcome, since the bald areas might expand. Wigs can be prescribed if patients, especially female patients, mention social discomfort. Prognosis In most cases that begin with a small number of patches of hair loss, hair grows back after a few months to a year. In cases with a greater number of patches, hair can either grow back or progress to alopecia totalis or, in rare cases, universalis. Effects of alopecia areata are mainly psychological (loss of self image due to hair loss). However, patients also tend to have a slightly higher incidence of asthma, allergies, atopic dermal ailments, and even hypothyroidism. Loss of hair also means that the scalp burns more easily in the sun. Loss of nasal hair increases severity of hay fever and similar allergic conditions. Patients may also have aberrant nail formation because keratin forms both hair and nails. Episodes of alopecia areata before puberty predispose chronic recurrence of the condition. Pitting of the fingernails can hint at a more severe or prolonged course. Hair may grow back and then fall out again later. Psychosocial issues Alopecia can certainly be the cause of psychological stress. Because hair loss can lead to significant appearance changes, individuals may experience social phobia, anxiety, and depression. In severe cases where the chance of hair regrowth is slim, individuals need to adapt to the condition, rather than look for a cure. There is currently little provision for psychological treatment for people afflicted with alopecia.   About Hair Loss and Chemotherapy One of chemotherapy's most infamous side effects is hair loss. If we suffer this, we will lose all of our hair, from the top of our heads to between our legs to our calves. Even our eyebrows will go, as will any hair sticking out of our noses and ears. Although hair loss isn’t painful, it reminds us—and others—that we are sick. Often, people who mean well will say stupid things once they see us walking around bald or wearing a cap or scarf. We have to prepare ourselves for the stupid things people will say to us. As with most of chemo's side effects, we and our medical team cannot predict whether we will lose all of our hair. But if we do, our hair will start falling out usually after three or four chemotherapy treatments, either gradually, in clumps or all at once. Exacerbating our hair loss is stress and malnutrition. But fear not: we won’t have to shave for several months and our hair will almost always grow back, sometimes even thicker than before. Some of us who had heads full of gray hair may find ourselves with heads full of our original colors. We can deal with our hair loss by: * Having our hair cut short before our chemo treatment begins. * Use a soft hair brush and wide-toothed comb to minimize or slow hair loss. * Use mild shampoos, especially ones for damaged hair. * Pat hair dry with a towel after shampooing. * Use the lowest settings on your hair dryer while holding the dryer at least four inches from your head. * Avoid dying your hair or getting a permanent during chemo. * Avoid using bobby pins, curlers, and putting your hair in a ponytail, even if you’re a man. * Shop for a wig or hairpiece before you lose lots of your hair so you can match the natural hair color. Synthetic vs. Human Hair Wigs Most women prefer synthetic hair. It's easier to maintain and less expensive. Most synthetic wigs have their style molded into them, but some can be reset. The advantage to style-able wigs is that you can change their look, just as with real hair. The disadvantage is that they have to be reset every time they're washed. Synthetic hair also dries faster than real hair. Well-made synthetic wigs may look real, but they never totally feel or move the way real hair does. Nor can you treat them like your own hair -- they literally fry when exposed to heat. So no curling irons or blow dryers unless they are specifically designed for wigs. Hot rollers can be used, but only at low settings. And avoid exposing the wig to any intense heat sources such as an oven. The blast of heat will cause frizzing. Wigs made of human hair will obviously look and feel more like your hair, but are expensive, starting at $1,000, and are far more time consuming. There are three types of real hair used in wigs: Asian, Indonesian and European. The most readily available and least expensive is Asian. It is also the heaviest and least like the hair found on Western European women. Indonesian is slightly finer and considered a mid-grade hair. European is the finest and most rare, and is priced accordingly. Since all these wigs are cleaned, stripped, dyed and possibly permed, it is often difficult to tell what type of hair a wig is made from by the color or the curl alone. Wig Construction The way a wig is made affects how it looks just as much as, if not more than, the type of hair used. A quality synthetic wig is preferable to a poorly made human one. There are three different types of wig constructions: custom, hand-made and machine-made. Machine-made wigs are the least expensive and most widely available. If you've ever worn a wig, this is probably the type you are familiar with. Wefts of hair are sewn together in a straight line, cut and assembled into a wig. (When you look inside a machine-made wig you can see the lines.) Many look extremely realistic as long as they are not parted, pulled back or otherwise altered. Some women find these wigs more comfortable because the construction creates vents that allow air to circulate to the scalp. Custom-made wigs are almost indistinguishable from natural hair. They are usually not a viable option for cancer patients, as they are extremely expensive and generally take more than two months to complete. Make sure that you have final approval on the choice of hair and style. And unless you have prior knowledge of the shop, call your local chapter of the American Cancer Society to double-check that you are working with a reputable establishment. Style Some women use this as a time to experiment with a number of different looks while others just want a wig that looks like their hair. Either way, a few adjustments can make your wig look as natural as possible. Keep in mind that a wig cannot replicate the way your hair blends into your skin. Sure, it does in movies, but that requires a great deal of time, makeup and a team of trained professionals. For your purposes, bangs, or at least wisps of hair covering the hairline, will help your wig look more natural. Even if you're staying with the cut you currently have, try a slightly shorter wig. During treatment, many women loose weight and become slightly drawn. A shorter style can add fullness. Plus, short wigs have less hair to brush out at night and don't tangle as easily. Wigs which utilize wide headbands along the hairline are easy to wear and stylish, but you're locked into wearing a headband. Such models are better for occasional use or as a backup. Buying two wigs in different styles can make life easier than purchasing one very expensive wig. You won't have to restyle your wig every time you want to put your hair up. Color Whether you're matching your own hair color or thinking about something different, try going a shade lighter. It will help offset skin tone changes that may occur during treatment. Always wanted to be a redhead? Go ahead, but stay close to your natural shade or lighter. Make sure you get the color you want. Look at the wig outside in natural light.
